Mingos add Uruguay youth international Agustín Dávila
After a promising start on the international stage, production has slowed. Will he find more goals in Madison?
Forward Madison today announced their final signing before the preseason gets underway, 25-year-old striker Agustín Dávila. He most recently played in the top flight in Ecuador and also has experience in Spain’s third division. He seems to have made quite a splash in the international game, scoring four goals in just seven appearances with the Urugay U18 squad and three more in 15 appearances for the U20 team, but has scored just eight times in 57 games for pro clubs.
There’s very little video of him online, so if I’m skeptical, it’s only based on the stats. He may have been up against stiffer competition than he’ll see in USL1, though. And he may be more of a creator than a finisher. Head coach Matt Glaeser certainly has high hopes, which he expressed at the Town Hall last week when hinting at the signing.
“He has great international experience and has competed in some high-level places,” Glaeser said in the announcement press release. “Agustín is hungry to come in and prove himself and show his ability in our market. His game intelligence, final quality in chance creation, and willingness to work on both sides of the ball will make him a key addition to our environment.”
Dávila began his professional career for Peñarol, a Uruguayan club in the Primera División League. In 2017, he played for the Uruguay U18 international squad, making seven appearances and scoring four goals. That same year, he signed with a third-tier Spanish club, Real Sociedad, and debuted for the club’s reserve team a year later. In the two years that Dávila played for Real Sociedad, he made 23 appearances and scored three goals.
From 2018-2019, Dávila competed for the U-20 Uruguay team, making 15 appearances, scoring three goals, and finishing third at the 2019 South American U-20 Championship. At the club level, he returned to Peñarol before being loaned to Liverpool Montevideo, a Uruguayan Primera Division football club, in 2020. He made 16 appearances and scored one goal in his season with them.
In 2021, the 5’10 forward joined Boston River, making 10 appearances and scoring one goal before being loaned to Guayaquil City for the 2023 season.
This is the 20th and final member of the 2024 roster who’s been signed and announced. It sounds like the club will carry somewhere around 22-24 total. Matt said at the town hall that five or six trialists will see playing time in the four preseason friendlies to compete for those last few roster spots.
