IT'S SPOKANE SPANKIN' SEMIFINAL SATURDAY!
HOLY FLOCKING SHIRT
IT’S THE SEMIFINALS
AT BREESE STEVENS FIELD
THIS IS SO NEAT
It was a shock pleasant surprise that Spokane Velocity beat 2-seed Northern Colorado in the first round of the playoffs, setting up tonight’s semifinal match at the fortress that is Breese Stevens Field, where the Mingos have lost only once this season in any competition.
The Velocity limped into the playoffs, winless in seven matches (during which they went five games without even scoring a goal), but snuck into the seventh spot with a 0-0 draw with Knoxville to end the season. It seems their devious plan to finish seventh and travel to NoCo worked, as they scored thrice in the second half to send the Hailstorm packing to bankruptcy court.
Meanwhile, your Mingos are in excellent form, losing just twice since July — both to Northern Colorado. Who, conveniently, are out of the playoffs.
The Mingos and the Falls have met twice this season, both in league matches, and Madison has won with a cumulative 5-0 scoreline. They first met May 19, when goals from Jimmie Villalobos, Devin Boyce and Aiden Mesias (on maybe the assist of the year from Christian Chaney) delivered a convincing win.
When Spokane came to Madison, they didn’t fare much better, as the teams endured two weather delays, John Murphy Jr scored maybe the goal of the year from about 30 yards and Derek Gebhard sealed a dominant 2-0 win.
Luis Gil is the key for Spokane, and if our backline and defensive midfielders can keep him quiet, I think we’ll be playing for the title in a week’s time.
I gathered a few fans to talk through the quarterfinal and the season as a whole, and to look ahead to tonight’s match. Give it a listen:
Alright Flockers. This is it. THE SEMIFINALS TONIGHT. See you at Breese! UP THE GOSS!
