IT'S A FULL MINGO GAME DAY! "More kits than wins" is almost a reality
"More kits than wins" is almost a reality
Could third kit bring fourth win?
So, yeah, FMFC became known for its kits in the 2020 and 2021 seasons thanks to the brilliant designs of former creative director Cassidy Sepnieski. By 2021, when we were languishing in the bottom of the table, the joke on Twitter became that Madison has more kits than wins. Okay, har har, very funny.
But after tonight that could become uncomfortably close to reality.
This morning, the club unveiled its third / alternate kit … or, as the club is calling it, the Alt Kilt. And … it sure is something.
Of all the kits this team has dropped over the years, this is certainly one.
Genuinely can’t believe nobody in the front office just kinda asked from the side of the meeting, “Say, are we concerned at all that it’ll look like the boys are playing in their boxers?”
I don’t mind the shirt, to be honest. There’s always a place for a solid color, and it’s a nice color. The collar and circular crest are classy, as are the jacquard stripes. The shorts though … well, I admire the commitment to the bit.
In any case, this is the third kit this year (actual kit, not counting warmups) and we’ve got three wins in all competitions. So. More kits than wins is dangerously close to … not a joke.
So let’s just get a win tonight and not worry about it!
FMFC adds Temi Ereku
As we read through all the comments about what the team needs, I don’t recall “another defensive midfielder” coming up, really. But this week the club added Temitayo Ereku on loan from Birmingham.
I will say one person suggested we needed more young and hungry players, which Ereku is — just 21 and eager to prove himself after, like Lucca Dourado, he got signed to the Legion and then didn’t see very much playing time.
We also heard some critique of John Murphy, Jr, and we also know Jose Carrera Garcia is out with an injury. So midfield depth is probably not the worst idea.
We also know that the team needs some help defensively, and Ereku can play as a fullback. I doubt he’ll be in the lineup tonight but it looks like we got a kid who can inject some energy into the midfield and maybe help the team shake off that staleness we’ve been hearing about.
So what about Greenville tonight?
I’m not even going to bother with a stats-filled preview, as our numbers are just kind of embarrassing to type out. Greenville has scored six goals in their last two matches, so you know they’ve got some swagger coming in. The only way to get any results will be to actually lock down for 90 minutes, and fully play the defense of which we are capable with none of those momentary lapses. And then score a penalty. Or get an own goal. Or something, I don’t care. Just win 1-0.
If you’re not coming to the stadium, you’ll have to watch on CBS Golazo Network. It’s free on the CBS website (click here) as well as on the Paramount Plus app.
There’s stuff before and after, too!
The Flock will host a tailgate starting at 5 pm outside Gate 6 — along Mifflin Street, behind the stadium — and march to Gate 1 before the match.
And afterward, our Unified Team has a game. Against whom? We don’t know, because the club has apparently decided to stop publicizing the Unified Team matches. We do know that they beat Chicago Fire 2-0 a few weeks ago, and Trevor Thwing will return to the lineup tonight after missing last season due to unexpected heart surgery, which is probably a story worth more than one Tweet but here we are. Regardless, I’d encourage folks to linger after the first team match to cheer on the Unified Team!
If nothing else, "We got more kits than wins" beats "so what if we suck?" as a chant.
